Alma Bonilla is a single parent of three child who has worked her way through the immigration system. She has been out of work as a result of a car accident when her car was totaled. She had injuries that kept her out of work for a month. Luckily her son was not hurt. Her car will be replaced since insurance was involved. Her doctor says that she can get back to work on August 1st and her job is being held for her. She is in need of help with her August rent of $950. She is working with the Family Peer Support Group at Beech Acres as she is afraid of her ex-husband. We can offer $200 and hope someone might be able to help with some of the remaining $750.
Valerie Harper is a cancer patient whose doctors are trying to find the right chemo treatment for her. Each time she goes in for a treatment, she is never sure if she will go home after it or be required to stay a week or more. Valerie fell behind on her Duke bill and agreed to a payment plan which she kept until one particularly bad visit to the hospital during which time she forgot to pay on time. As a result she lost the agreement and received a disconnect notice and she contacted SVDP for help. We suggested that she ask the doctor for a medical letter for the future. When we called Duke her power had already been disconnected while she was hospitalized. We are able to provide $200 and we are hoping that we can find $500 restore her power for when she gets home.
